The choices we make in our yards and gardens can impact the quality of our air and water, provide cooler temperatures in the summer, and create habitat for other living beings. Just like its cousin spring, autumn is a time of rapid and wondrous change. With cooler temperatures and increases in precipitation, we can finally make our own changes to the landscape without overwhelming our plant friends. But the biggest change of all may be in our own minds and how we choose to perceive beauty this time of year.
Tips for September:
Appreciate the fall character of dried flower heads and fading leaves by leaving them be
Save seeds
Move plants to better locations and divide perennials
Plant new bulbs, shrubs, and trees.
Nurseries frequently offer discounts this time of year and fall native plant sales are popping up all over
Lightly prune shrubs and trees, prioritizing dead branches and stems or anything blocking paths
Reduce watering overall, yet give any drought-stressed trees a long, deep soak
Cut back vines that have grown into trees, as well as ivy and blackberry
